June 8 - Lassi - photogr. old homes market. Bought cucumbers & Malay apples. Pink, crisp, flavorless. Ft. v.d. Capellen - shops - green candy in Ch. store - cut w. string held in mouth, small boy rolled in basket till round. Lake Singkarak - green river, high waves, mountains. Lunch in Pasanggrahan. T. bought python skin. Macaque chinked coconut tree - whistle - roll twist brought down three - drank - monkey got coconut. Stop in Padanq Pandjang to photo - carved painted house w. tin roof, & gold fish ponds. Good view of Merapi, cloudless & smoking 2800 m. High wind. Clouds boiling on Sunggalary - heavy rain which we missed. Note on hotel peddlers. Silk sarong - mengengkab weaving. Grootes for dinner. News of Rafflesia
June 9 - Zoo in morning. Picked out birds we wanted. Debated all morning about weather. Packed box lunch then stayed for hotel lunch. Bought white weaving (Pajacombs). 1:30 sun came out; dashed for Batany Palalpach. Sign across road "Stop! Raffleria." Nature monument. Trail through kampong, rice fields, into forest. Come suddenly upon it down slippery path. Rust red with raised orange blotches. 5 petals, huge calyx like bowl w. spikes - est. 36" across. Carrion fly laying eggs on border - 1/4" thick - felt like dry fungus. Monstrously un-natural - Gourami pools, granaries, tin roofs - Horned flies near entrance to woods - always low on leaves near stream. B. T. & Wms photographed for 2 hrs. Saw two birds & one passé - buds dark hard balls - one finished circular mass of dark mold. Prob. 100's blooming to-night, only one that anybody knows of. Native boys help Bill collect; horn flies in their fingers, snapping  [[turip?]], poking out caterpillar, bringing grasshoppers, scaring away Aenictus on bridge wh. was ideal for catching.
June 10 - Saw panorama. Got pictures, Rafflesia. Collected along way. Lunch on Loeboek Sikaping. Hot spring - extra seeping - Devils' mt. folded hills like green velvet, buffalo grass, trees in canyons between folds. Came into Kota Lopan after dark. Aroma of wood smoke & frying coconut. Children cheer - Reflection of ^[[insertion]] new [[/insertion]] moon in rice fields. Sawaks like stained glass windows. Pass. buff. carts in dark- Pasanggrahan w. radio & frigidaire
