A terrible shock. Arthur tried for an hour to get Ruth Robertson on telephone. Called up Dorothy McClure got Shelia who hadn't heard. Got Ruth at Mrs. [[Elks?]]. Said he would go right out. Back & Arthur left on 12.55 train. Dorothy and Bruce met him in Westport. All thought better not to see Bill just now. Paul coming down. Arthur paid 250 for funeral expenses, there was money for other expenses. Arthur reached here and me at 10 P.M. that evening. He couldn't go to sleep at all. I very little.
