Sunday 14 July

PM Mrs Callahan calls and says her boy Arthur is to sail for France with the army right away.

Monday 15 July Gertie arrives from Madison to look over things before we move. I show her the portrait of the Doctor & she says its good but too thin. must be stouter & head bigger. Color is good but depression under lip too dark & hair a little too grey at top sides. She likes the general scheme & thinks it will be fine.
Annie goes over to Drs again. I take her down on street car as G's car is busy. Stop to see Kress who says it will cost Plunkett $6 for carpenter to put together frame for my portrait of him. which Kress has offered to cover.

the last day father was there, how he said-"well I'm going out now to get a fine steak and we'll all sit down and have it, for it will probably be the last time." Edie says "Oh no it won't" Well, I'm afraid it will be" father said. Afterwards when he went Edie said she watched him "as he went to the corner to wait for the car and looked all around and he seemed so sad seemed as if he didn't want to go."

17 July Wednesday rather hot in New York Go up to the Metropolitan Museum and spent a long time looking up the Copley portrait of Washington. Ask the guards where it is no one seems to know Do not find it with the other Huntington miniatures in the Huntington case. Stop to see Dr. Hervilly & have a long talk with him. He is much interested in my book and agreed Copley is much finer than Stuart or any other American.
