larger canvas. Says no but does so as I find later. Miss Nelson tells me she is so mad over what Baker [[pumped?]] [[?]] to write in the Times that she can hardly speak to him. Says. "Baker had no right to call this his studio. It's mine and I pay all the expenses of it. Besides I'm not his pupil. I'm a pupil of Scally & the statue is myidea he asked to be allowed to work on it." Miss N says her father is coming Thursday and she wants him to get the right impression. As they go out Baker comes in and I draw a slight charcoal head of him. Nordell comes in & starts a fool discussion with Baker on phsycology I go out and they're at it still when I return. Lock up at six oclock Val not returning. In morning on way to Miss Oliver meet Atwood who says he's working hard to raise money for the war says he'll not paint till the war is over. again who says [[Coburn?]] asked her to do something with our show. Meet Henry Poore on the street. and at the corner W J [[?]] asks me in to see his etchings. Says he could nt sell them so had to go into real estate. Says he bought a picture from Tarbell when I was hard up says he knew Helamp and Twatchman owns a Twatchman. Feel most desperate not to have check from "Transcript." Show Davey the portrait of me by George Luks. Have it out in the sun on Andersens porch of studio and call Davey am to dark nearly to see it. Asks me to bring it into his place. Sits down to look at it, and says "Its a good Luks I wouldnt say its the best Luks I've ever seen, but its a good Luks."
I look at it beside [[strikethrough]]his[[/strikethrough]] Daveys red haired chap in [[?]] and the dignity of Luks in contrast is smashingly apparent. Poor Davey I tell him they are interesting together and remark the dignity of Luks. He says "Yes" He gets down to see it and says "I feel that and that (highlights on hair and cheek hurt the bulk of it a little." Later over town I meet the red haired subject of Davey with Fouquet and the red one says "Who ever told Davey he could paint. I wont pose for him any more Its a rotten thing he did of me & he dont want to pay anything. I say I thought he was rich. "Rich he says why he's broke, he wants to sell his car.
