Thursday 12 Sep paint little Patricia O'Connor for Mr Brush at 10:30  Stop at 1 and arrange to finish tomorrow. PM. over to Vals paint another head of Richard Kimball. Anderson drops in. Randall Davey comes along outside and Val tells him that a New York man had said that if I were inclined to do it I could fix Val with the dealers in New York. Davey listens and turns to me and smiles as Val goes on.  Davey says "Young Napoleon"
Then he says to Val "Well I'll tell you what you want to make a success in New York of course you need Britton but-you also need the Tammany  The Salmafundi Club. There's where they fix you up for the exhibitions and the prizes."  On way home near dark find Sloan up under the willows painting in the very spot I suggested to him a few days ago. Auerbach Levy is with him.  Sloan sings out as I pass at some distance in front of them "I saw your portrait of Kronberg I thought it was a fine sketch."  I say "You find some subjects up here after all"  Oh yes  [[Shyse?]] Bats.  Sloan is in a white suit
Friday 13 Sep. down at 2.30 to touch the portrait of Patricia O'Connor. Find Mr. Brush theer at the O'Connor cottage.  Work most of afternoon though it is rather dark. Patricia and I have fine chats and her grandma makes chocolate for us.  Paint Patricia in yellow scheme yellow dress & yellow gold background [[strikethrough]] dark [[/strikethrough]] dark hair and rich sunburned face make a nice spot with white collar.  Mr. Brush

comes in and says "You've made a very pleasant picture" and says "if you'll sit here a moment I'll bring you a small check as an installment on your picture. Mrs. O'Connor comes in & makes some remarks which require my coming again. So say Monday 2.30  Mr Brush says he hopes to let me have chance to do something more on my portrait of him.
Saturday 14 Sep.  start for Boston and Hartford. Lose 2 hours on trolly to Springfield and miss last train. Have to wait till 3 in the morning. Reach Hartford stay in Kress's studio. I have to go out for breakfast. Return find Kress and Grace Turner & Ks sailor brother. later in comes Montgomery of the army.  Great tales of army and navy  Monty says ships returning from France battlefields carry wounded and maniacs. Says the sights the American boys see give them shattered nerves and shell shock finishes their reason. Kress has photo of Eaton in his army YMCA uniform. E ready to sail. Hours of war talk and much banter about our draft class 18-45. Today's Boston "Herald" has reproduction of my port. of Ringius. Kress gets very enthusiastic over it. Go down to Standish Street, find a note on my door which I consider insult - Have no more to do with that agent. Decide to [[?]] the place. Back for 2.54 train  call up Ringius to tell him of his portrait  off again to Boston. Hartford makes me sick. Called up the Doctor who says he's been dazed ever since his little girl died. Says she had intestinal trouble and that Marion had it and my mother had it and they thought both would
