   Stuart wrote that the Lansdowne portrait was "the only original I ever made of Wash except the one I have ("Atheneum") head [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] 
"I painted a third but rubbed it out.

   Ed. says the destroyed head was the first Stuart did in 1795.  Before destroying it he made some copies of it among them the Gibbs-Channing.  The Atheneum head he finally sold (Editor)

   Rembrandt Peale p 149 says Birch came to Phil with a min. of Lord Mansfield after Reynolds & CW Peal sat to him.  Birch tried to get Washington to sit but RP says Pres would only let Birch in to do him as he worked at his desk  R Peale & Stuart did Washington about same time  After R Ps first sitting W gave one to Stuart who had just arrived from Europe to do it  RP says Birch min was copied from Stuarts first
