I'm giving Lilke away but he doesn't know it. That signature I put onto his letter "Java Head" fixes it on Salem and Lilke is the artist at Salem. Great man this. ! Oh hell.
After T goes in come Mahonri Young & Dougherty. Y comes over to see me & makes no move to introduce Paul. but P comes and stands beside me so Young says to me "You know Paul Dougherty [[surely?]]". I shake hands & say "Delighted" Young says "This is Jimmy Britton if you want an argument or a disagreement he'll give it to you anytime." We're standing in front of Frieseke's girl & mirror as D says "You know I get a reaction from Frieseke I like it and yet I can't get away from the idea that its frivolous. I say I used to think so but got over it. Ask him if he saw F's academy [[p?]] both he & Young agree it's very true. D turns & points to Hassams interior with figure & says "there thats got it what the Frieseke lacks.

I say I think just the opposite. I take D into his own show next room & point to a green marine of his. Then tell him how I used to see his wood pictures in Macbeths old cellar gallery when I was with [[Jacques?]] at [[Scribners?]] D says he knew Jack. I tell D I want to do a charcoal head of him & he says "Come around & see me"
I tell him Davidsons head is nothing. Young smiles. Young looks very nice all shaved up and dressed in black. He is a fine old chap. Stop at Art News and in the envelop with proof & copy find Townsend has "edited" my Boston Transcript letter on Stuart Washingtons in amazing manner!
