Monday 3 March. Call up D about show. Says he was down there nothing changed. I ask him to meet me there at 3. [[strikethrough]] He [[/strikethrough]] I go for Higgins who says Du Bois was in this morning to the show. Higgins says "He liked your picture of D. he didn't look at anything else. He said to Babcock "Did you write that introduction to the catalog" and as Babcock hesitated Du Bois said 'You didn't write that Britton wrote that'" Higgins laughs say Nelson of "Studio" was in. Trying to tell him Higgins that T Bernstein whom he featured in Feb. issue is the coming artist of America. Higgins gets heated about Nelson & declares Nelson told him he was head of adve. of "Studio" leaving the way open for an arrangement. H says Bernstein paid for the "write up" in Studio. Walk up to Babs. Meet Buckler of Glocester in there talking to B. Introduce him to Higgins. Buckler says he saw Twachtmans grave in the cemetery & Gloster not a mark in it. Dickinson comes in & we go into gallery. I ask Friday to have my portrait [[up?]]. Gets it up. D takes down Renwick. I put up his Emma. We get my port up. Babcock comes out & says if it stays up the exhibition comes down. Walks off to the front of gall. I ask Higgins to say a word to Bab. & he

gets him out in gall again & starts in making a great speech. Says "Mr B we've decided we want that picture of Mr Brittons in the exhibition. I can't see what objection you've got to it. The frame is an old Royal Academy frame and is just as good a frame as was in its day as the one on my picture. As for the portrait I think it's a fine dignified portrait." Babcock began by telling Higgins that a very important man had just left the gallery & a man who had written books on art and he said there was only one expressionist in the bunch and that was Higgins. The [[flattery?]] didn't work because Higgins at our council of war said to Dickinson "We're going to stand by Britton. Our stuff comes down if his portrait isn't hung." D says Amen. Higgins says "Yes we're going to stand by him that portrait goes up."
After Higgins is done & Bab hesitates I say that I have too much respect for Mr. B to send in a p that would injure his gallery that this p is bought and paid for & the people will be in to see it etc. Bab says under the circumstances we'll see what we can do if we can find a frame for it why all right

6 lines up from bottom of left hand page, I am wondering about the line "ask Friday to have my portrait .........up. Do you think it could be "by (and then an artist's name?) I would hate to lose the artist's name if that is what this line says. He might be referring to his own portrait of Dickinson. It's a confusing passage.--thomasc
