As I go int Bowdoin is going out says I'm not running away but I've a lot of places to go to. " I say you'd better go it's dangerous for you here. Hear Vonnoh ranting inside up in Miss Genthe's show ranting. After her victims go I grab him & tell him about the paper & he rants again rants says "no painter should criticize another painter tisn't good [[strikethrough]] eth etc [[/strikethrough]] ethics etc. Maxfield Parrish comes in Vonnoh introduces him & while we argue hot & heavy Gregg comes in I ask Vonnoh if its worse for an artist to write criticism than it is to sit on a jury" This find sympathy from Max Parrish & Vonnoh is quelled for a minute. I mention Cox's portrait of Parrish & M says [[strikethrough]] he [[/strikethrough]] it was agony & Cox gave him a little deformed arm. I say I'll do one that's like him. He laughs says "never again" Vonnoh continues to rant and rant wishes me luck & says he's on 23rd St and wants me to come in.

As I start out I find Gregg's been waiting all the time after [[going?]] Mitch had come to warn Vonnoh who was yelling, that there was a newspaper man out there & not to slam the papers too hard. I said to him "Oh that's Gregg of the Herald he doesn't mind, he likes this stuff" [[?]]...When Parrish goes he says after seeing L. [[?]] Genthes nudes "I'm going out to get a policeman" After V goes and I start out Gregg is standing waiting for me. I see him standing meek little man in his black overcoat hat and cane in hand and his sharp eyes, and his sandy mustache chopped off along the line of his enormous mouth. He says quietly " I got your letter Mr. Britton." I say "What did you think of it." "No newspaper could print that letter. Babcock was responsible for the ex and his name was in the catalog. I was dealing with him [[strikethrough] ]I do [[/strikethrough]] and it's no good for someone to come up out of the cellar now to say Babcock didn't write that introduction." "So you're the kind of critic who uses public space to attack and wont permit an answer" I say. He says he took the ex as it stood. I say "You mean to say you saw no evidence of the fact that I had anything to do with that Ex"? He says "No" I say "Well I'm very glad to know it" and he goes.
