   Wed. 4 Ap.  stop at Mrs Sherwins call up Carol who is quite cheerful.  Mrs Sherwin gives me the devil and I tell her her little girl must be painted.  Over to Nans find the kids all right   back to NY.  Stop at Montroses who asks me if I've seen the [[Lamerdalt?]] show at Gimpel's I tell him of Brandegees condition and he says he knew of it.  Has a new landscape at Bs in place of the other sold. I tell him he ought to keep them going now.  Stop at Kingore's.  meet Molarsky there and as I start to go Kingore leaves a man he's talking with and comes running over to say he wants to subscribe and know the adv rates of my paper.  I tell him Ill be in again.  Stop at Gimpels fine new galleries  See Rene and other goops  Ham. Easter Field person is beset by feminine male evidently connected with the Gimpel house to write something while the show is on  Field protests it takes time to prepare it.  gets a chance to say how much the "Eagle" (Brooklyn) is doing for art since he took hold and now art must come back.  Field is one of that husky looking brand of suspicious male.  Looks a little like Gutzon Borglum but in caricature.  Looks dangerous. Read his page afterward  find he writes like an ass.  These dealers of course play to his vanity  He's one of these advanced fakirs of the Bourgeoise's stripe  Bourgeois number I have now and am almost ready to believe the worst Townsend said of him.  B had the nerve to tell me he spent

$800 on his stage set model ex.  I didn't think he was such a fat --- & he gives that as his reason for not advertising but wants to subscribe.  Marvelous.  Hell with these. Just then out bounds Jane Peterson from the banquet room filled with lady tea drinkers off in the front room.  Bounds back into the gallery -- babbles  [[strikethrough]] I do [[/strikethrough]] I admire Miss Judson's hat with daisies on it.  Jane says "Now my dear you must come up and pose for us in my studio Mr. Britton and I will paint you.  Now remember your first free day.  Miss J smiles, says the hat is her sisters.  Jane prancing and full of ideas about the new paper.  I tell them I've just met Ben Foster who said my name was up for election at the Academy and says "I hope you'll slip through tonight."  Ben looks very old  I tell him about Brandegee & Charlie his brothers.
  Jane says Bellows & Henri are going to try to get in to Academy  a lot of liberal younger men to get control.  Meet Harry Watson in front of [[strikethrough]] [[Uncon?]] [[/strikethrough]] Lotos Club and H still talks about all he's doing for the cause and how he's overworked etc.  Harry is funny.  Asks me to see him.  Stop at Mussmans.  Find Mrs. M waiting for Higgins to put up his pastel show.  Higgins comes in with new pastels.  They are darned fine  Spreads them out.  Mrs. M
