Thursday 8 May. Stop at Daniels find J there with Halpert. Wild Bolshevik comes in and finds I'm not entirely out of sympathy with their griefs. Talks a bit. Then he goes out. Halpert, Benn Berne & Daniel get going. D trying to defend Wilson and his man Friday also. I have to make my speech about the British putting Wilson in the royal bed writing covenant of League of Nations and letting Wilson read it. Daniel who has been wildly excited drops into a chair with roars of laughter & says "Britton by God you ought to be on the stage. Ben Benn shakes his head in royal amusement. Halpert smiles assent and the thing is done. Then in comes Steiglitz with another. I seize on Steiglitz & take his breath away with a sally or two. He sits down & tries to revive. We then let him come round to himself & when he goes he's solemnly wishing me luck with the new paper. Quietly beside him sits [[strikethrough]] John Marin [[/strikethrough]] a [[strikethrough]] great [[/strikethrough]] silent grim thin man dark tight lipped with a half humorous smile tight black curls of hair smashed to his small top head and gathering behind his ears dressed in black the last word of effacement. I hadn't noticed him tho he sat between Steiglitz & me until Steiglitz made a point by reference to "Mr Marin here". John Marin. Well I'm surprised and greatly. Marin reminds me of the [[Grant?]] & seems rather real. I think more of Daniel right away because of Marin's [[x ind?]]. Good
