Commissioners of Patents [[red underline]] Thomas Ewing [[/red underline]] and his brother present as guests.  Very interesting and pleasant evening.  Relatively large numbers present:  Winship, Mershon, Ellis, Robins, Thomas Sprague, Pupin both the Hewitts Wood, Doherty, Weston, Ward, Leonard, Bradley, . Big round table.  Ewing made speech explaining his work at Patent Office how by appointing special men to pass on [[strikethrough]] ret [[/strikethrough]] interference proceedings before they were declared he had succeeded in reducing enormously number of interferences and hoped to do much better, how he was hurrying

out of office all cases which had dragged on too long.  How he intended to use present building to better advantage and instal fire-sprinklers as soon as Department of Labor was removed out of the present Patent Office building.  He recommended inventors not to stir up any reform at this time when there was decidedly hostility against patent system.
Sprague spoke in [[overwritten]] the [[/overwritten]] also in the latter sense.  So did [[red underline]] Doherty. [[/red underline]] Weston and Mershon spoke in favor of a commission. I too. Very agreeable and instructive evening.  Returned to Yonkers with Ewing's brother 11:45 P.M

Jan 19. Spent most of day writing my address for [[red underline]] Weston's Inventions [[/red underline]] .
Rainy foggy day

Jan 20. Revised [[red underline]] Weston Address [[/red underline]] and got it typewritten.  Chandler sent me copy of his. and I sent copy of mine to him and Weston.
Got cable from [[strikethrough]] Mr [[/strikethrough]] [[red underline]] Dr. Henry [[/red underline]]
