towards evening saw the automobile parade in the Prada.  A rather unorganized affair all cars rushing along, some containing masked people.  Throwing of confetti etc.  They kept this up for about 2 or 3 hours until dark. What astonished me most was to see some whites whom one would have taken for gentlemen, to dance with fat ugly negro women.- Sentiment of race seems to be less developed than pride or

conceit.  A negro band played a noisy shrill music without intermission.  Went to bed about midnight.  Same noises in the street, ash cans, loud talking, dirt collecting; same smells!  Reminds me of some european cities.

Up/early.  Walked to wharf; hired rowboat to the fortress Las Cabanas.  Looks like a place one reads about in books. Old walls, old buildings everywhere, very much like the port at San Juan in [[strikethrough]] Cuba [[/strikethrough]] Porto Rico. Avoided the bands of tourists guided around by an ever talking guide so was all by myself in very nook and corner.- old dungeons. old watch towers.  Found in one corner large amount of old projectiles, old cannon balls and antique devices for charging cannon.  Then walked to Morro
