Afternoon was the funeral of the Mayor of Habana, one of the old patriots of Cuba, a former General. A procession preceded by [[strikethrough]] some soldiers of [[/strikethrough]] a [[strikethrough]] reig [[/strikethrough]] regiment of soldiers, in khaki uniform, some Cavallery and Artillery Soldiers make good impression
Evening invited [[red underline]] Bush [[/red underline]] and Lister to theter.  La Viudad Allegra. (Merry widow), then went to Plaza Hotel all together

Matanzas. Good road amidst sugar fields and meadows.
Fine old trees, Royal Ponciana along the road, also royal palms everywhere. further some wooded rocky hills, and landscape then reminds somewhat of Porto Rico.  Visited a sugar central.  At Matanzas miserable hotel, bad lunch poorly served.  The visit to the Cave near Matanzas then back to Havana about 6 P.M. Car was a Packard car.  Cuban chauffeur. About 120 miles in all.

March 2. bought ticket to leave tonight and packed trunks.  Went with Bush and Lister to Botanical Garden.  Few specimens, not to be compared to b. g. of Kingston Jamaica.  Bush invited me for supper at Miramar.  Left them about 9.P.M to take my train which left at 10.P.M.
