The latter was mainly composed of negroes, and the main instrument was a big drum handled with fearful noise -- like a bombardement -- and that gourd as used in Porto Rico.

March 6. I had a delicious sleep: not too warm nor to cool
The clean room well ventilatd and with clean linen is a joy after my former experience.  Got up early at about 6.AM. Went to see the market and took long walk.  Then after lunch a siesta. Then again a long walk
Evening there was concert by the band of the soldiers - (rurales) good music and good selections

mostly spanish or cuban airs.
Everybody of any importance in town seemed to have turned out and walked about the square with its [[strikethrough]] roya [[/strikethrough]] big Ceiba tree and Royal palms.  Those who had carriages or automobiles kept parading around the square
Many handsome and simply but tastefully dressed senoras and senoritas walking or driving and everybody seemed to enjoy the whole thing.  After concert was over at 10.P.M many remained walking about the square, which by and by emptied itself.  The square seems the main loitering place and even well after midnight some loud conversations are going on. People seem to be unconscious of noise here and there is always some clattering of horses on the cement pavement or some loud talking or singing and everything
