March 7 (Sunday) First a walk then I took a carriage drive, up and down the old town
The Pasco or boulevard is a sad looking affair among unkept surroundings, wooden shanties, open sewers etc.
All looks miserable and very primitive.  There is lots to do to improve the general sanitation of the city.  Afternoon went to San Juan where american troops attacked the spanish.  Place is on the

outskirts of the town and seems to be a real estate development  San Juan itself is enclosed with a fence and gate says no entrance private property.  But while I was there - beautiful sunset, flooding ^[[distant]] mountains and landscape with pink colors. There is some kind of an amusement resort "Vista Allegre" in the immediate neighborhood: Merry-go-arounds, Ferris wheel, cinematograph, open air theatre etc, frequented by children and adults alike.  While I was there the electric light gave out on account of some trouble at central plant and the place was suddenly in absolute darkness.
