is decidedly more attractive Finally arrived at Wentworth Hotel at [[red underline]] Newcastle by the Sea [[/red underline]] at about 5. P.M. - We have made to day about [[red underline]] 160 miles [[/red underline]] This is the same hotel where the [[red underline]] plenipotentiaries of Japan and Russia occupied during the famous peace deliberations of 1905 [[/red underline]]. The hotel is nicely situated overlooking the pretty sheltered harbor for Yachts. with a little park between. It is cold, [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] bright weather. Evening the place seems more crowded. Regular summer resort hotel with same class of table d. hôte people. Celine met some Yonkers people. Mrs. Alexander Smith, etc. Slept well like usually since this trip.

July 22. Up early but left only about 9 [[underlined]] 30 [[/underlined]] A.M. Again beautiful weather. - My bill here for all four only $22 [[underlined]] 00 [[/underlined]] including 1 [[underlined]] 00 [[/underlined]] for garage. Road is along the shore. As soon as we are in [[red underline]] Massachusetts [[/red underline]] roads become decidedly better. ^[[An excellent long flat bench at Essex.]]^ We entered [[red underline]] Gloucester [[/red underline]] about noon, and bought provisions for lunch. The usual canned sardines which we ate under the shade of two rows of willow trees along the road, near [[red underline]] Annisquam [[/red underline]]. Then went to Annisguam to visit Mrs. [[red underline]] Townsend [[/red underline]] who was just at lunch with her boy [[strikethrough]] ate [[/strikethrough]] We ate the huckleberrys of their garden. Then about 3 P.M we went further. Pretty seaside resorts, fine country residences in Beverly. Then entered [[red underline]] Salem, [[/red underline]] which seems a very busy and very crowded place
