Sept. 1, 1916 [[red underlined]] Hendrick last night nearly caused a fire [[/red underlined]] in the hotel by [[red underlined]] falling asleep [[/red underlined]] in bed while reading near his glass [[red underlined]] kerosene [[/red underlined]] lamp. The watchman a colored student of Hampton Institute was immediately at hand to extinguish the beginning fire which did not go beyond slight scorching of the floor matting. About 9 AM we both left

Kept on running till about 8 P.M. and anchored beyond [[red underlined]] Fort Edward [[/red underlined]] Lock, in the upper Hudson - same white and red Buoy lights winking to us. Rain during night
