During target practice we were all sitting on deck on chairs near the big guns, about 20 feet from turret or about 60 feet from muzzle. [[red underlined]] All have cotton in ears. [[/red underlined]] Roaring deep noise but not so bad as I expected. Red cloud of ^[[nitrous]] smoke easily dispersed. The hot flare of the flame radiates at our cheeks. - sensation of heat in the face for a fraction of a second 
Two guns of each turret fired at the same time, this being a competition between

turrets. A big roar and two black objets, [[red underlined]] like two black birds [[/red underlined]] flying towards targets in straight line - Looks every time as if they were going wide of the most but presto, two holes in target and they both have hit! First run [[strikethrough]] 2 bul [[strikethrough]] 3 hits and 2 bulls eyes out of [[strikethrough]] three [[/strikethrough]] ^[[five]] shots. [[red underlined]] Six shots [[/red underlined]] must ^[[black underlined]] all [[/black underlined]] be fired within [[red underlined]] 80 seconds after [[/red underlined]] signal to fire is given, otherwise the hits do not count. - this makes it very difficult because delays in firing are due not only to pointing but to rolling of ship and of target.
