Oct 16. I got up at 5:30 A.M. Weather is very calm. So we left at about 6:30. Pleasant weather and fair wind. [[strikethrough]] Later [[/strikethrough]] Big swells altho' no wind. This as a result of yesterday's bad weather [[strikethrough]] We are [[/strikethrough]] Later on head winds but [[underlined in red]] Cygnet [[/underlined in red]] rides handsomely.
This looks entirely like navigating in the Ocean. We are steering all day by compass and frequently see no shore at all. Towards evening sea gets rougher. Then later some light rain. Then pitch dark. 
[[underlined in red]] Picking our way - one light house after another. [[/underlined in red]] Now and then a red light or a green light a sailing ship near by; then again a glow of lights in the

distance - a steamer. Lights - fixed. - others eclipsing. - then again lights indicating fish nets. We finally see [[underlined in red]] New Point Comfort [[/underlined in red]] ^[[eclipse]] light and feel we are getting nearer the end of our journey. Some hesitation whether it eclipses in one second or two seconds. Then a quick turn to starboard till we see the red sector of lighthouse at Fort Monroe, and now for the port Tense moments of attention. Great sport. - Quite some waves finally [[underlined in red]] slip in behind hotel and drop anchor at about 10:50 P.M. [[/underlined in red]] And now for our cold supper which tastes so well. But this is not a good shelter for we are [[underlined in red]] rolling fearfully all night. [[/underlined in red]]
Oct 17. Captain is [[underlined in red]] grouchy [[/underlined in red]] because he has not been able to sleep and [[underlined in red]] I am getting pretty tired of his grouchy ways.  Why did he select this place anyhow? [[/underlined in red]]
