Oct 19. Sea is smoother but weather still threatening. [[red underlined]] Celine [[/red underlined]] leaves for New York where she will arrive to night. I go aboard [[red underlined]] Cygnet. [[/red underlined]] Engine troubles there. We examine carburetor, ignition system etc. Finally called in consultation Mr Craig. After much perplexity find all trouble due [[red underlined]] to oil on plugs, [[/red underlined]] due to oil drawn in by air intake which connects with crank case. It is too far advanced in the day so I conclude to stop at Southland Hotel. Good hotel. 
I [[red underlined]] notice that [[strikethrough]] all [[/strikethrough]] negroes and negro servants are more polite and seem better trained than in the North. [[/red underlined]] None of that impudence [[strikethrough]] wh [[/strikethrough]] nor slovenliness which is so frequently apparent in the East or North. The men and women here are [[red underlined]] more cheerful and more urbane than in New York or Philadelphia
