Evening went to annual dinner of [[red underline]] Old Alumni of Columbia all graduates before 1880. I was guest of honor [[/red underline]] and called upon to [[red underline]] make the speech of the [[/red underline]] evening. A very impressive set of men. Dinner was at Council room of University Club. Speech was offhand. [[red underline]] Subject the exaggerations of political opponents and [[strikethrough]] how [[/strikethrough]] that country is not going to the dogs, as some people in their political bias are wont to believe. [[/red underline]] My speech was unusually [[red underline]] well received [[/red underline]] and applause changed in a

real ovation and [[strikethrough]] everybody [[/strikethrough]] many came to congratulate me and [[red underline]] I felt [[strikethrough]] well compensat [[/strikethrough]] very happy about way I was treated. Mostly all of board of Trustees there. [[/red underline]] 
Jan 11. Very cold weather. Evening went to [[red underline]] speak [[/red underline]] at dinner of [[red underline]] Am. Institute of Chemical Engineers [[/red underline]] Spoke about [[red underline]] Efficiency and human efficiency [[/red underline]] and danger of engineers degenerating in "pipe-fitters" and how [[red underline]] France with her apparent lack of technical efficiency at the end of two and a half [[/red underline]] years war had succeeded in [[gaining?]] [[red underline]] the sympathy, admiration [[/red underline]] and love of the World while [[red underline]] Germany [[/red underline]] with all her efficiency had lost all sympathy and had reaped contempt and enmity of the World.
