to meet [[underline]] rear-admiral Usher [[/underline]] commandant of Brooklyn Navy Yard to urge him clemency in [[underline]] Young Dubois' case.[[/underline]] He is very pleasant and friendly to me as usually but when I explained case of Dubois to him He was stern, said discipline had to be enforced, [[underline]] punishment was necessary [[/underline]] etc. very disinclined to revise his return. Then asked me what I would propose. I said: "Let him reinlist." to which he answered that that would not do. Finally asked me to [[underline]] write him a letter [[/underline]] and he would see what he could do. I [[underline]] consider all this very stupid and stubborn and punishment absolutely too [[/underline]] severe.
