Arrived at [[underline]] Frederick at about 6^30^ P.M. [[/underline]] Streets much encumbered with motor cars. Narrow streets. Stopped overnight at New City Hotel. Passably clean and room with bath. But was kept awake till late at night with noise of horns of motor cars in street below. Noisy place. Just as noisy in morning. Left at about 9^30^ AM. for Gettysburgh.
[[left margin]] 488 miles. [[/left margin]] took in 2 1/2 gallons of gasoline. Excellent road [[underline]] to Gettysburg. [[/underline]] road [left margin underline] July 23 [[/left margin underline]] up and down, rolling fertile country. Corn main crops. Distant mountain ridge. In some of the villages the roads are execrable in contrast to excellent road outside of them. They wait till the State builds the roads for them. Arrived [[underline]] Gettysburg [[/underline]] about noon. Radiator has not overheated altho' brisk driving all morning Very hot weather. Went to Eagle Hotel the "best" in town! Rather shabby.
