Sept. 7. Went to New York for lunch to meet [[underlined in red]] Dr. Lucy [[/underlined in red]]

Also met [[underlined in red]] Teeple [[/underlined in red]] who tells me he does not object in serving [[underlined in red]] without title [[/underlined in red]] of professor but wants to be the [[underlined in red]] head of department while he is [[/underlined in red]] active and thus forestall interference from part of [[underlined in red]] Alexander Smith [[/underlined in red]] Telephoned [[underlined in red]] Pegram [[/underlined in red]] to join us and discuss situation together I believe [[underlined in red]] Teeple is right. Pegram [[/underlined in red]] says cannot take

decision before [[underlined in red]] consulting Butler [[/underlined in red]] who is away. In the meantime all there matters are needlessly postponed and end of vacation is is drawing near without any well defined plans. 
Evening left for [[underlined in red]] Washington. Celine Nina and Tessie Middlebrook [[/underlined in red]] left in small motor car for Ithaca to [[underlined in red]] see George. [[/underlined in red]] I would much have liked to join them in one of the last opportunities [[strikethrough]] before [[/strikethrough]] for seeing him before he leaves for France. I shall try to go there next week. [[underlined in red]] Celine tells me there seems to be greatest friendship or more between Tessie Middlebrook and George. [[/underlined in red]]
Sept 8. Introduced Dr. Lucy to Dr. [[underlined in red]] Woodward and to Manning [[/underlined in red]] Director of Bureau of Mines. Meeting of [[underlined in black and red]] Naval Consulting Board [[/underlined in black and red]] till about 2 P.M. 
Returned same night Midnight train.
