July 9. Here all morning. Afternoon [[red underline]] Columbia meeting of Committee on Industrial [[/red underline]] Research fellowships then talk with Baskerville, Jackson and McKee about [[red underline]] present difficulties in the depletion of the Chemical teaching staff in Columbia [[/red underline]] and College of City of New York and discuss whether means can be found for avoiding duplication of the same lectures. [[red underline]] McKee nor Jackson [[/red underline]] are not very enthusiastic about this.

Evening went to listen to lecture of [[red underline]] John Kendrick Bangs [[/red underline]] who has just returned from the front as an officer of the Y.M.C.A. and who gave a stirring lecture full of praise for our soldiers, [[red underline]] the French and what America has accomplished in France. [[/red underline]] He scorned our newspapers and all men who had by their unjustified [[red underline]] fault-finding tried to diminish [[/red underline]] what America has done in Europe.
July 10. Here all day. Feel rather disquieted at [[red underline]] Nina's [[/red underline]] habits of sleeping till 9 A.M. and 9:30 A.M and [[red underline]] then doing nothing useful and spending day in New York on some pretext or another instead of getting into some regular useful work. I feel disgusted [[/red underline]]
