Passed in review the cristalline products and part of novolak products Harvey shows me his cristals of [[red underline]] hexalic compound [[/red underline]] obtained from [[red underline]] ortho-cresol. [[/red underline]] Last week he showed me the corresponding [[red underline]] paracresol compound. [[/red underline]] Gave him [[red underline]] dimethyl [[/red underline]] paradroxy diphenylmethane to try to make [[red underline]] hexatri-compound [[/red underline]] from it. Formerly he had not succeeded in making anything but hexa-tri-phenol, then succeeded with [[red underline]] paracresol [[/red underline]] I told him to repeat again and heat longer for ortho and meta because probably temperature of formation is somewhat higher for them. He now succeeds except with [[red underline]] meta [[/red underline]] but told him then again temperature of formation

may be too near temperature of [[resinification?]] and when the latter occurs the the crystals of the hexa triphenol may be drowned in the syrupy mass. He [[red underline]] had announced a hexatri-compound from carvenol, [[/red underline]] but on examination of the crystals it was found to be simply hexamethylentetramin cristallyzing out of the carvenol. Told him to try again and heat much longer.
Went to [[red underline]] Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce lunch as guest to welcome Allied business mission. [[/red underline]] Then went to "Rudder" to select some books then to Frank Brown Jones Yacht broker to inquire about schooner-yachts for sale. The chap is rather queer and seems to give scant attention to his customers.
