I note that [[red underline]] most of the life boats Davits are not properly greased and [[/red underline]] one of the fall and blocks of the boat No. 7 which had to be swung out was ill fitted. The brass screw slide of the Davit was so badly covered with Vert-de-Gris that it took all the efforts of two men to turn it, and it made a [[end page]] [[start page]] 51 shrieking noise. On inspection of similar parts of the other boats I notice the [[red underline]] same lack of care, [[/red underline]] which undoubdetly would render lowering of the life-boats much slower if not interfering entirely with it. May 10. [[red underline]] Drinking water on the table has been much clearer [[/red underline]] during the later days, but to day I note that the running water in my washbasin is hot from both the hot and cold water faucet, and has again an ugly brown color.
