Aug 6. Light rain all night and this morning. Yesterday bought two live lobsters from a fisherman here who had caught them in the Sound each weighs 2 1/4 lb. Spent morning writing letters and fixing things around boat.
Aug 7. Showers and squalls. We succeeded in [[red underline]] fixing the awning so as to catch rain water for our water tanks. This is a great simplification. [[/red underline]]
A violent squall and rainstorm towards evening.

Aug 8 (Sunday) Weighed anchor and proceeded northward. First anchored in [[red underline]] Hempstead Harbor. [[/red underline]] Excellent water and anchorage. Abundance of good beaches. them after eating several dozens raw. [[red underline]] Excellent [[/red underline]] About 4 P.M. left and went to [[red underline]] Cold Spring Harbor [[/red underline]] where dropped anchor South of Abrahams Boat Yard. Excellent night's sleep.
Aug 9.
Up early, went rowing as far as the village. Splendid clear water. Then went to collect exquisite ice cold drinking water which [[red underline]] spouts from a spring on the shore wall. [[/red underline]] Then a swim and hurried lunch and went away and anchored in [[red underline]] Oyster Bay [[/red underline]] about same anchorage as last year. Lewis went to buy a chicken and I prepared a dish made by boiling together [[red underline]] chicken, carrots, onions, potatoes, corn, [[strikethrough]] ano [[/strikethrough]] beets and cabbage. - delicious[[/red underline]]
Aug 10. Showers. swung ship to correct deviation of compas.
