Rained all night
Aug 11. Still raining much this morning then cleared up. Left about 10 A.M for [[underlined in red]] Port Jefferson. [[/underlined in red]] smooth water not a ripple, easy to steer Arrived at Port Jefferson about 1 P.M then immediately more showers while at anchor - and so till time to go to bed. This is a [[underlined in red]] good harbor [[/underlined in red]] well protected and quiet but a very rudimentary town. To bed at 8 P.M
Aug 12. Up at five. Left at 8:30 A.M. Engine after we left the jetty worked very well. Kept straight course for about 30 miles and was able to verify my deviation chart for compas. Test came out very well. Light wind smooth sea. average 9 knots gasoline consumption only 4.34 gals per hour or 0.096 gal. per horsepower hour.. Passed [[underlined in red]] Plum [[/underlined in red]]

[[underlined in red]] Island [[/underlined in red]] then entered [[underlined in red]] Gardiner Bay [[/underlined in red]] and dropt anchor at 2:30 P.M before pier of the town of [[underlined in red]] Orienta [[/underlined in red]] noted large quantities of [[underlined in red]] potato-barrels [[/underlined in red]] send Lewis to inquire. They ask only 3.75 per barrel retail. We bought two barrels one for me and one as a present for Lewis. Stowed the potatoes in the [[?]]th of the Ion. Then proceeded cruising around neighborhood. [[underlined in red]] Greenport [[/underlined in red]] then [[underlined in red]] Shelter Island [[/underlined in red]] finally anchored towards evening in [[underlined in red]] Dering Harbor [[/underlined in red]] near the Summer Hotel and before the local Yacht Club. Excellent anchorage. Rain during the night
Aug 13. Some showers this morning then proceeded towards [[underlined in red]] Sag Harbor, [[/underlined in red]] along shores of [[underlined in red]] Shelter Island [[/underlined in red]] All beautiful waters. more cheerful than Florida
