Towards evening anchored before [[strikethrough]] Point [[/strikethrough]] [[red underline]] Smith Point Bridge. [[/red underline]] Quiet anchorage well sheltered. Many local sail boats and fishing and bathing parties. Left bridge is black with people fishing. Lewis and I caught big crabs as fast as we could drop our line.
Sept 6. I went out alone, strong Eastern blowing. Evinrude behaved well at first then got trouble heading the wind which got worse and worse. Spray made me wet from trousers to collar 
Leaky boat. Had to pump, consult chart and steer at same time. This trip is to explore the channel before proceeding with Ion. Near entrance

of [[strikethrough]] Forge [[/strikethrough]] [[red underline]] Forge River [[/red underline]] got caught in eel grass and waves drove me ashore. After rowing hard to get again in deep water tried to start Evinrude motor but did not succeed 
Found plug cracked. Rowed for about 45 minutes against wind and current then improvised a sail with oar stayed as a mast to which I fastened a piece of oilcloth which I guided by means of some spare rope and this way managed to get back to [[red underline]] Ion [[/red underline]] by about 2 P.M. Used the other oar for steering and as centerboard. and managed to pass in the middle of [[red underline]] the narrow [[/red underline]]
