Jan 7.  This evening [[red underline]] Linfeld [[/red underline]] offered supper to [[red underline]] Gould, [[/red underline]] Drake and myself [[red underline]] at Louis. [[/red underline]] Excellent canvass back duck and dark red wine served as "coffee" in coffee pots.
Jan. 8  This afternoon Gould drove me to [[red underline]] Arthur Lachman's [[/red underline]] house thru Presidio etc. [[red underline]] Lachman [[/red underline]] shows no trace of his recent breakdown.  Evening [[red underline]] O'Neill took me to the Christmas Jinks of the Bohemian Club [[/red underline]] preceded by a dinner then vocal and instrumental concert by members. Excellent. Also a play. "Christmas Night also played and written by members, and excellent [[red underline]] string orchestra by members [[/red underline]] Undoubtdetly the members of the [[red underline]] Bohemian Club [[/red underline]]

are more resourceful and less self conscious than the members of the University Club or Century Club in New York. A very enjoyable evening.
Jan 9. (Sunday) Another sunny day alto somewhat cool.
Am leaving for [[red underline]] Los Angeles [[/red underline]] with 5 P.M. train by Southern Pacific. A full sleeping car and wash room much crowded next morning.

Jan 10.[[red underline]] Los Angeles [[/red underline]] makes a crowded noisy ill kept impression. Went to Hotel [[red underline]] Van Nuys [[/red underline]] recommended to me by Brunton as the "best" hotel.  Rather second class in appearance and service, no room available till afternoon. A stroll thru town made me [[red underline]] more and more disgusted with Los Angeles [[/red underline]] so concluded to leave with 3 P.M. car for San Diego.
