Made 5 then 6 then 7. knots. Other experiments with sail rig proved [[?]] satisfactory. When going for Gravesend Bay, overtaken by a pouring rain and squall. Mizzen heaves to beautifully. Arrived at anchorage Gravesend Bay, wet to the bone. Violent S. E blowing wind increasing 
Oct 24. Blowing hard all night. SE has become a violent N.W. but anchor holds well. Lewis scared

At about 3 P.M. wind moderates. So got out. Vollstead Sub-chaser. came after us. Lewis and myself in oil skins and So. Westers Ordered to heave to. Then inspected. All politely and good naturedly. I told them who I was but they searched my boat just the same Name of subchaser was "Hansen" Wind still blowing hard. [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] Then after sunset got calm. Anchored below Palisades opposite Spuyten Duivel. at 7 P.M. Tired but happy and hungry and anxious to get warm. Starry night.
