The little stubby knolls of the vines are only [[red underline]] a foot or less above the soil and are about 3" to 4" thick. Vegetation here is not so far advanced [[/red underline]] as in Morocco or Andalusia or the Riviera. [[underline]] May. 1. 1923 [[/underline]] Beautiful weather this morning. the socialists are out and celebrate labor day. All stores closed so are restaurants. No cabs obtainable. their procession makes a mediocre impression. No order, the men slovenly in appearance and in marching motley comparable to our workmen processions or manifestations. Had to wait till 1 P.M. before I could find a restaurant open.
