The mast can then be lowered without slackening the shrouds.
It would be undesirable to encumber my deck with a bulky winch of the kind but I might improve my rig by placing a block behind the mast.  This block to be attached somewhere so as to be between the "coffin" and the foot of the mast. A rope or wire-rope might be led from the lower part of the mast thru this block or sheave and be pulled either by a small winch placed somewhere on the side of the coffin or the trunk cabin and far enough away from the compass no to influence the latter.

this way they can be pulled sternwards and the purchase which commands it will operate until the last inch before it gets in place or when the mast is started to lower.

The sails have a gaff, a rather long one, exceeding the [[strikethrough]] top of [[/strikethrough]] truck of the mast and a perpendicular leech; they have no boom.
Some of the boats are sloop rigged others ketch.  The peak halyard pulls in the middle of the gaff not at the end.
