Japanese representing Shiohara to ask me questions about phenol and bakelite. He brought me a tray from Shirohara. Also a check for part royalties. I intend to return that check as we have never agreed on amount of royalties and I do not want to establish this 5% as a precedent.
Sept 25. Long conference Hays. both Georges and Townsend on subject of asking General Electric to use word bakelite on all its advertising etc. Concluded unanimously not to do it. Townsend will write letter condemning his advice. (This occurred on Sept 27) Hurried discussion this morning between Redman, Hay both Georges and myself. as to who to appoint as directors in place of present directors of Condensite Company. George Roll exasperates me in his stubborn and

unwarranted stand that one or more of the Brown boys should be appointed as directors so as to make them feel good While I want to make the whole thing simply a technical formal [[strikethrough]] leg [[/strikethrough]] matter by appointing Hays one of his office men and George Roll. I feel so much the more impatient because in a few minutes Kirk Brown will be around and this is the time to act and act quickly. George Roll sometimes is very slow in grasping all the important points of a situation. altho' he means well. Redman, Hays, George Baekeland quickly caught my point of view and declared themselves in favor of acting on my suggestions Later on Schleussner arrived and approved fully.
