Evening Mr & Mrs Rudolf Eickemeyer came here for supper and to listen to Radio.
Dec 31. Very busy day here. Snow and sleet. Answering many letters congratulation about presidency of Am. Chem Society. Newspaper yesterday published official information about my election.  This morning I got very much provoked and lost my patience when I heard that George Roll has made quite a fuss about my request of discontinuing his joint bank-account. He evidently does not

grasp the situation or is carried away by personal vanity in this matter. It is an almost recurring fact that when you give somebody anything by courtesy they soon claim it as a right. Furthermore people feel their pride easily wounded if by this stand of indignation they benefit at the same time. I foresaw the possibility of such situations and this was the reason why I hesitated so long in bringing family relatives into my business. The trouble with George Roll is that altho' he is a scrupulously honest man who means well enough, he does not realize his limitations. This lack of knowledge and quiet judgement is a
