Am much reminded of that new book of Hilaire Belloc [[red underline]] "The Contrast" [[\red underline]] where he defends the thesis that the "New World is wholly Alien to the Old" and that even England can impossibly understand the United States and warns against danger of misunderstandings which are sure to arise if U.S. [[strikethrough]] tries to work with [[\strikethrough]] accepts invitation of European countries to work with them on international problems.

Evening, little informal dinner offered to [[red underline]] Pupin [[\red underline]] on occasion of [[strikethrough]] his [[/strikethrough]] award to him of Pulitzer Price for his biography.  A charming little feast 16 of us representing 13 different collegues and not two at the table in the same occupation of life. [[red underline]] Mr. Peet [[\red underline]] presiding.  Excellent speeches everything perfect.
May 22. This morning a long report of Swan with a letter from [[red underline]] Reynold's [[\red underline]] Spring threatening with go over to [[red underline]] Durez [[\red underline]] infringing material unless we reduce considerably our price of [[red underline]] bakelite. [[\red underline]] Another letter of George B. urging reductions.  - Similar report by Rossi. Things in [[red underline]] Painesville [[\red underline]] very bad.
