After leaving Chambly proceeded a few miles further then anchored in a quiet spot near a farm. Two freckled farmboys who looked rather Irish, but spoke no word of English came alongside wondering at our boat. Let them come aboard. They were very well behaved and polite.
July 16. Reverse carefully tried. [[underline]] Friction band is worn out.[[/underline]] Left 10 A.M. Gray and cloudy. Barometer low. Beyond St. Ours lock slight trouble with the pump and had to anchor for an hour. Raining then pouring at Sorel [[strikethrough]] on [[/strikethrough]] the Richelieu is very crowded with every kind of junk, so anchored on a flat in St. Lawrence

opposite the two church spires. Pouring rain!  After sunset rain stops. Lewis and Dick go ashore for telegram. All well at home.  
July 17. Exceptionally bright day. Westerly breeze blowing sun very hot. - Barometer 29.6 which looks ominous. St. Lawrence well buoyed everything went smoothly. Had timed myself to pass Richelieu Rapids about high water. Nevertheless there was considerable current. Nearing Quebec a violent Easterly starts blowing and rain squall.
