Then to Bellevue Hotel. Well served standing lunch. Unusual variety of distngushed visitors mostly physicists, engineers and chemists. Many British one or two Germans.
Professor [[underline]] Coker [[/underline]] of London afternoon read very interesting paper for determining stresses by an optical method Listened to [[underline]] Lash Millers [[/underline]] & Stieglitz paper

Evening, private dinner party given by [[underline]] Rosengarten [[/underline]] in honor of Fabri. About 25 present [[underline]] I was toastmaster. Sir Robert Robertson, Baly, Donnan [[/underline]] from England all there, also Vice Provost of U. of Pa. 
A L. [[underline]] Day, Norris, Herty, Bancroft [[/underline]] etc. a very animated and interested party, good fellowship and true wit - a great success. Lasted till 12:30 AM 
Many came to complement me next day.
Sept 18. Papers read. [[underline]] Haber [[/underline]] of Germany read a paper in characteristic German style. I had avoided him by declining three invitations to meet him for dinner. A big fat bald head, closely shaved so as to bring out so much the more shining fat pale skin
