May 11. [[underline]] Mr. Pain [[/underline]] of Paris submits his [[strikethrough]] patented [[/strikethrough]] bakelite asbestos motor car clutches. [[underline]] Redman and George [[/underline]] present. Matter referred to [[underline]] Sanford Brown [[/underline]] who is away till next Monday. Took [[underline]] Pain to U.C. [[/underline]] for lunch.
May 12. Afternoon meeting of our [[underline]] Department of Chemical Engineering to discuss finding positions for our graduates. [[/underline]]
May 13. Went to [[underline]] Townsend's [[/underline]] office to talk over
pending patent matters [[underline]] Townsend looks gloomy and tired. [[/underline]] Refuses again

to take in Dyer Smith or anybody else and says there is no necessity and our patent department can easily be taken care of as it is now is we only appoint one man for indexing patents and if Redman spends every week half a day with him [[underline]] I am not convinced of his arguments, [[/underline]] yet cannot decide him to give him an assistant 
He also is [[underline]] very gloomy [[/underline]] as to our pending [[strikethrough]] patent suits [[/strikethrough]] or [[underline]] contemplated patent [[/underline]] suits, [[strikethrough]] [[trade?]] [[/strikethrough]] (2 step and laminated). He [[underline]] looks very tired and irritable [[/underline]] I have no doubt [[underline]] they pile too much work on his shoulders. [[/underline]]
