invited our company to merge with Cyanamid. I had told to Pope that Cyanamid did not have a reputation of being well managed etc. [[red underline]] Whitaker [[/red underline]] came to convince me [[red underline]] to the contrary [[/red underline]] etc expressing high opinion about its [[red underline]] President, Bell [[/red underline]] and the men connected etc. Told [[red underline]] Whitaker [[/red underline]] all this was very interesting but that as far as combining is concerning [[red underline]] I first had to think the matter over carefully [[/red underline]] after which [[red underline]] would decide whether [[/red underline]] I should submit the subject to my associates for further consideration or not and then let him know. [[red underline]] Hendrick [[/red underline]] was to speak about his recent trip to Europe. - [[red underline]] Am told he is seriously ill [[/red underline]] with [[red underline]] pneumonia [[/red underline]] since two days. This casts a gloom over meeting. - I fear the worst.
[[underline]] Oct 29. [[/underline]] Rain all day. At office. Found [[red underline]] cablegrams from Germany [[/red underline]] and from France urging us to send George to Europe to sign papers for a new contract etc. etc. Submitted matter to Rossi and Sanford Brown (later on to Redman) We all agree not to sign and to [[red underline]] send cable withdrawing our offer of June 26 1930. [[/red underline]]
[[underline]] Oct 30. [[/underline]] Paper announce death of [[red underline]] Elwood Hendrick. [[/red underline]] Another old friend gone. Fortunately for him was ill only 4 days.
