producing one of the raw materials namely [[red underline]] formaldehyde [[/red underline]] while Cyanamid Co was in best condition for the other material [[red underline]] Urea [[/red underline]] or Sulfo-urea. [red underline]] Told him [[strikethrough]] we [[/strikethrough]] our German Co was ready to go into [[/red underline]] the field there but was [[red underline]] waiting [[/red underline]] for the decision of [[red underline]] the patent suit [[/red underline]] in Germany which was to occur in October.
[[red underline]] Whitaker was very frank [[/red underline]] and said he too thought an arrangement between Bakelite Corporation and Am. Cyanamid Co [[red underline]] logical [[/red underline]]
Told me Cyanamid has formed a subsidiary which possessed the [[red underline]] Beetle [[/red underline]] Patents and had also acquired the [[red underline]] Pollak - Ripper [[/red underline]] patents. But that they had been threatened with infringement suits from the "Unite Co" of which [[red underline]] Carleton Ellis [[/red underline]] and [strikethrough]] I. Cy [[/strikethrough]] Am I Cy. (American branch of Interessen Gesellschaft) were stockholders with the idea of issuing [[red underline]] licences [[/red underline]] to others who wanted to enter the field of Aminoplastics. They had succeeded in intimidating one or two companies in forcing a license on them, paying a certain sum of money per pound (1 cent per lb?) and a minimum payment annually and formal recognition of the validity [[strikethrough]] of the [[/strikethrough]] ^[[of [[underline]] all [[/underline]] their]] patents etc. This [[red underline]] Whitaker had refused [[red underline]] to do after his patent lawyers had [[strikethrough]] assure [[/strikethrough]] convinced him that [[strikethrough]] their [[strikethrough]] ^[[the Unite]] [[red underline]] patents were invalid. [[/red underline]] But so as to save trouble had consented to sign a license, [[red underline]] stipulating a small royalty [[/red underline]] per lb, but which could be terminated at will by Cyanamid Co, and in which they refused to affirm or accept the validity of the Unite patents [[red underline]] "Unite" [[/red underline]] had sued a small concern "Aldur" for infringement, selecting poor and weak people to thus obtain an easy [[strikethrough]] technical [[/strikethrough]] suit and then use the result for strengthening their position

But [[red underline]] Whitaker [[/red underline]] after he heard of this had told to the patent attorney of Unite (who is young [[red underline]] Duisberg [[/red underline]] of Germany) that if they did not withdraw the suit, Cynamid company would have entered the fight on the side of [[red underline]] "Aldur", [[/red underline]] so the [[red underline]] suit was dropped [[/red underline]] On leaving I told Whitaker I would keep him posted on any developments in Germany and he would keep me posted here. - Tells me he [[red underline]] sees little future in ornamental articles and novelties for aminoplastics, unless they can enter the larger industrial fields. [[/red underline]]
Afternoon - 3 P.M. went to opening of lectures at [[red underline]] Columbia University [[/red underline]] in Academic procession.
President [[red underline]] Nicholas Butler [[/red underline]] in his opening address criticises modern politics, the Government and without naming names, Hoover and Roosevelt. - Same tirades and reproaches as ever, and [[strikethrough]] advocacy of [[/strikethrough]] denouncing tarif-walls international bariers [[strikethrough]] by t [[/strikethrough]] caused by tarifs etc etc. Same ever recurring criticisms of a man who never knew Hoover and does not want to know him. [[strikethrough]] I have s [[/strikethrough]] Nothwithstanding my great admiration for Butler he is an example [[strikethrough]] who [[/strikethrough]] of a gifted and intelligent man who sticks to his prejudices. Professor Montague, philosophy, [[strikethrough]] made [[/strikethrough]] tried to apply his philosophical analysis to communism and individualism. Rather witty but unconvincing.
[[underline]] Sept 29. [[/underline]] Weith reports to me that [[red underline]] Rossi [[/red underline]] proposes that we pay [[red underline]] Dr. Taylor [[/red underline]] till July 1 - 1932 in full now, and lay him off, and that we reengage a Junior physicist at $2000. - This would mean, losing the services of Taylor and pay about $1500 more for a young man not so well qualified as Taylor. - I am against such an arrangement which is principally dictated by the desire of Rossi and Weith of getting
