After Potter left me I went for a visit to the [[red underline]] South Kensington Museum of Natural history [[/red underline]] where on my first visit to London in [[bold red underline]] 1886 [[/bold red underline]] made such a profound impression on me. At that time it was the first Museum which had made a beginning attempt to exhibit its specimen of birds etc somewhat in natural surroundings of [[strikethrough]] flowe [[/strikethrough]] flowers, plants or rocks instead of keeping them simply stuffed in glass cases. - Since then our Natural Science Museum, profited by the example and enormously surpassed it beyond comparison [[red underline]] To day the South Kensington [[/red underline]] Museum appeared to me like a [[red underline]] well kept but antiquated [[/red underline]] collection. - Was specially impressed by the fact [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] of the [[strikethrough]] scarcity a [[/strikethrough]] relative scarcity and poor representation of U.S. specimens.
For instance the Florida Alligators were only represented by a very poor specimen scarcely 3 feet long and

no representative of Florida crocodiles. same for fish etc and birds. On the other hand abundant specimens from Africa Asia etc.
On leaving museum I bought in a small fruit store one of the [[red underline]] small yellow mangoes [[/red underline]] imported for the first time from [[red underline]] Bombay. [[/red underline]] This was a bold attempt. The people who sell them do not know what it is and I had to tell them [[red underline]] how to eat them. [[/red underline]]
[[underline]] June 11 [[/underline]] (Sunday). Visited [[red underline]] Kingsbury. [[/red underline]] Train much crowded on account of Holiday season. No trouble going but returning at 6, my 1st class compartment was invaded by a standing crowd that had tickets for [[strikethrough]] 1st [[/strikthrough]] 2nd & 3rd class but behaved well. - Took tea and beer at Kingsbury's and had pleasant chat. [[red underline]] Mrs. K. is a cripple [[/red underline]] and sits on a chair but is keenly interested in everything. K. has 2 unmarried [[strikethrough]] spins [[/strikethrough]] daughters about 40-50 [[strikethrough]] but [[/strikethrough]] homely but [[red underline]] intelligent [[/red underline]] and helpful.
[[underline]] June 12. [[/underline]] Busy day several matters & packing for Germany
[[underline]] June 13. [[/underline]] Left Liverpool station 10 AM. for Flushing. - Potter there to see me off. [[red underline]] Boat, "Zeeland" [[/red underline]] altho small makes 22½ knots so, rolls considerably and puts down most of passengers. Went to eat something in dining room and in getting [[red underline]] Dutch [[/red underline]] money change the [[red underline]] steward [[strikethrough]] mana [[/strikethrough]] tried to hand me some deteriorated Dutch coins, [[/red underline]] old contemptible [[strikethrough]] European [[/strikethrough]] [[red underline]] Continental trick [[/red underline]] I did not expect in Holland.
