could tell them whether I had a pending option on them. At that time I had answered [[underlined in red]] Ripper, unequivocally: yes. When Whitaker met us all three [[/underlined in red]] in my office I told him [[underlined in red]] it was our intention to invite Ripper to come [[/underlined in red]] here for discussing [[underlined in red]] details concerning [[strikethrough]] passage of [[/strikethrough]] [[underlined in red]] purchase of his patents [[/underlined in red]] Whitaker said his company had already cabled (or written?) [[underlined in red]] Vredenburg [[/underlined in red]] to visit Ripper for this very purpose. - I told him [[underlined in red]] Ripper would decline to see Vredenburg [[/underlined in red]] as he had scant enthusiasm dealing with V. But that I and Ripper had mutual confidence in each other and that V. approaches would simply complicate matters with no better result. Further more I am inclined to think that [[underlined in red]] Vredenburg, [[/underlined in red]] who is a [[underlined in red]] trader [[/underlined in red]] with all the instincts [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] of personal gain in such a transaction might not obtain [[strikethrough]] the patent rights of [[/strikethrough]] first the patent rights (of Ripper) [[underlined in red]] for the English Beetle Co [[/underlined in red]] including the [[underlined in red]] U.S. Ripper patents [[/underlined in red]] with the intention of thus trading off directly the U.S patents to [[strikethrough]] Am. Cy [[/strikethrough]] Synthetic Plastics (Am. Cyanamid Co) [[underlined in red]] Whitaker agreed with this point of view and promised to cable Vrendenburg [[strikethrough]] to m [[/strikethrough]] not to meet Ripper. Whitaker in his usual broad minded way [[/underlined in red]] accepted readily [[overwritten]] our [[/overwritten]] a point of view that if the Ripper patents were acquired [[underlined]] by them, [[/underlined]] they would fall under the same conditions as the present patents on which

[[note in left margin in red]] Cablegram to Ripper [[/left margin in red]]
After [[underlined in red]] Whitaker [[/underlined in red]] had left I wrote [[underlined in red]] a ^[[long]] cablegram inviting Ripper to come here as the guest of Bakelite Corporation to discuss purchase of his patents, [[/underlined in red]] we to pay his travelling expenses until his return. But [[strikethrough]] we [[/strikethrough]] I postponed sending telegram until tomorrow evening (Friday) which still would insure delivery of cablegram to Ripper on Saturday. [[underlined in red]] This gives us a night more to think about it [[/underlined in red]] and the wording of the cablegram
[[underlined]] Aug 4 [[/underlined]] Much cooler to day. With George rewrote text of cablegram and submitted it over phone by Rossi who to day is in Bound-Brook. [[underlined in red]] So we all three agreed and nightletter Cablegram was sent. [[/underlined in red]]
[[note in left margin in red]] Investments [[/left margin in red]]
Had a [[underlined in red]] conference with Hays and George [[/underlined in red]] Baekeland on the subject of improvement in [[underlined in red]] methods of [[strikethrough]] finance [[/strikethrough]] our finance Committee. Hays [[/underlined in red]] says that further inflation is threatened from Washington and [[underlined in red]] suggests Fidicuary [[strikethrough]] Trust [[/strikethrough]] Trust service for handling our investments [[/underlined in red]] but in such a way that our company has the right to veto their decisions. [[underlined in red]] Hays leaves for a weeks vacation [[/underlined in red]] Tomorrow I shall drive to Baekeland Camp, on [[underlined in red]] Lake Utowana, which I have never seen thus far, altho' it was purchased in the spring of 1923. [[/underlined in red]] I shall combine this visit with the celebration of [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] our [[underlined in red]] 44th wedding anniversary.
George Baekeland is not so keen about the "Fiduciary Trust Service", [[/underlined in red]] and states that [[underlined in red]] Hays [[/underlined in red]] has [[underlined]] very poor judgement [[/underlined]] in selection of investments and that almost all his recommendations were erroneous.
