as in actual operation where one can follow all the problems connected with the operation of an American coal mine, and the most modern improvements. Many other exhibits are equally interesting. [[red underline]] Ehrenfeld asks us [[/red underline]] to let them instal in their museum [[red underline]] our Bakelite exhibit [[/red underline]] now in the Chicago Exhibition. - I am heavily in favor of it. [[strikethrough]] The [[/strikethrough]] Our outlay for the erection of this exhibit has been about [[red underlined]] $5000. [[/red underlined]]
At the meeting of A. C. S. met many old friends, [[red underlined]] Stieglitz, Hale, Browne, Whitney, Rosengarten, Harkins, Dunlop, Bancroft [[/red underlined]] etc. etc.
[[underlined]] Sept 13 [[/underlined]] At 9.30 A.M. Council meeting [[red underlined]] Lamb [[/red underlined]] presiding as president but [[red underlined]] Charles Parsons [[/red underlined]] bossing the meeting. [[red underlined]] Willard Gibbs [[/red underlined]] dinner in honor of [[strikethrough]] Will [[/strikethrough]] [[red underlined]] Professor Wildstatter, [[/red underlined]] who this year is [[red underlined]] Willard Gibbs Medallist. [[/red underlined]]
Enormous dining room filled with participants. Was placed on the speakers table [[red underlined]] as one of the seven former medallists [[/red underlined]] present this evening as invited guests. Am the oldest among them as medallist, as the medal was first awarded to [[red underlined]] Svante Arhenius [[/red underlined]] of Stockholm then to Prof. Richards of Harvard (both deceased) then to [[red underlined]] me in 1913. [[/red underlined]] Am still the only medallist who got this reward for [[underlined]] industrial [[/underlined]] chemistry. (See reports of the meeting. Karrer of Zurich, Banger of Edinburgh, and Bronsted of Copenhagen were also quests, having been invited by the Exposition [[strikethrough]] C [[/strikethrough]] to come as guests, with Wildstatter to Chicago. Wildstatter read a well prepared address giving the history of his research work etc. in English

which he speaks fairly well Cold chilly day, all day
[[underlined]] Sept 14 [[/underlined]] [[red underlined]] Horn [[/red underlined]] came to report to me about his examination of the books etc of [[red underlined]] Autopoint [[/red underline]] [[strikethrough]] Comp [[/strikethrough]] Co, and has not discovered anything unpleasant Also reports of favorable prospects and general good spirit of the men there [[red underlined]] since Jacobs has been discharged [[/red underlined]] Evening went to special dinner of [[red underlined]] Chicago Chemist Club, [[/red underlined]] at the Administration building where the "old timers" chemists who visited the Chicago Worlds fair in 1893 - as I did - were guests. While the cold wind and rain were blowing outside, the windows were kept closed as well as the doors, thus producing a [[red underlined]] suffocating atmosphere [[/red underlined]] [[strikethrough]] which [[/strikethrough]] I called the attention to it, and was told that the building was [[red underlined]] "air conditioned"! [[/red underlined]] and this statement seem to palliate the others. - I had heard similar statements in the stewy damp overheated rooms of the Stevens Hotel also in [[strikethrough]] mine [[/strikethrough]] my hotel. - Which shows [[red underlined]] how easily [[strikethrough]] peope [[/strikethrough]] people are beguiled [[/red underlined]] by a word or a slogan. - After awhile I came to the conclusion that if this was "air condition" I would not stand it. So I slipped out in the middle of the dinner and did not return. [[strikethrough]] Instea [[/strikethrough]] Outside it was very windy and cold. But I walked to the new [[red underlined]] Planetarium [[/red underlined]] about 2 miles away where I spent a most interesting and restful evening before returning to bed. Felt glad that hot dinner room had been the cause of seeing the Planetarium.
[[underlined]] Sept 15 [[/underlined]] Went to visit [[red underlined]] Autopoint [[/red underlined]] Co [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] with Robert [[red underlined]] Brenecke, [[/red underlined]] and had a long personal interview first with [[red underlined]] Deli the technical manager
