87/ June season seemed like an enchanting region, after I had barely escaped the clutches of death.- Then my [[underlined in red]] Velox [[/underlined in red]] enterprise and struggles and difficulties during the depression which started in 1893 and lasted several years the death of my first child, then the birth of [[underlined in red]] George [[/underlined in red]] and [[underlined in red]] Nina [[/underlined in red]] and then success beginning in 1898. [[underlined in red]] Velox [[/underlined in red]] being recognised on its merits. Then [[underlined in red]] sold out to Eastman in 1899. [[/underlined in red]] and - freedom! from commercial worries. And then [[strikethrough]] after [[/strikethrough]] purchase of [[underlined in red]] Snug Rock [[/underlined in red]]. After our return from a long visit to Europe. occupied the house in early September. Changed the stalls and box stalls into my modest [[underlined in red]] research laboratory which brought forth Bakelite etc. [[/underlined in red]] All thise memories floated again thru my mind and now it even seems strange that I am ^[[now]] the owner of both properties. and the Crags standing idle and used for storage of [underlined in red]] Nina's [[/underlined in red]] furniture until she returns from the camp to occupy the house she had rented in [[underlined]] Scarsdale [[/underlined]] while she has rented out her own house in Tarrytown. Celine believes that in her present situation she will be in better surroundings than [[strikethrough]] those of some [[/strikethrough]] in [[underlined in red]] Philipse Manor [[/underlined in red]] [[left margin vertical in red]] Nina Research Laboratory Velox [[/left margin vertical in red]] [[end page]] [[start page]] 88/ [[underlined in red]] My main perplexities are what will the new generation - our grand children do with their excellent opportunities. [[/underlined in red]] Unfortunately it is the human tendency to take all gifts and all better opportunities - for granted. I might have done the same if instead of starting poor, my parents had been wealthy. - I [[underlined in red]] wonder whether my grand children will have the same incentive [[/underlined in red]] to develop their own career and rejoice in every step of betterment and in the results of their own work I would gladly fit up "The Crags" so that Nina and her children might live there and enjoy their surroundings. On the other hand I believe it much better for them to live [[strikethrough]] more modestly [[/strikethrough]] in more modest quarters.- If they are worth it they will so much the more enjoy what comes later on to them. I rummaged thru old documents letters, cancelled checks, paid bills etc. etc. dating as far back as 1899. etc. till late in the evening. [[underlined]] June 20 [[/underlined]]. Went to office. Lunched at U.C. [[underlined]] June 21. [[/underlined]] [[underlined in red]] Directors meeting [[/underlined in red]] at 11 A.M. all there except Sanford Brown [[underlined in red]] Leo Karpen there to inquire in how far he could publish balance sheet, earning and condition [[/underlined in red]]
