The guide (Van Hee?) ran the boat, [[strikethrough]] when [[/strikethrough]] [[red underline]] little Middlebrook boy, [[/red underline]] (whose parents were in Pittsburgh where they live,) was playing with a rubber ball, which suddenly fell over board. The child tried to grasp it and fell overboard. Lillian Prentice, jumped in the water but the boy dragged her down. The guide seeing this jumped after them, reached them and unfortunately tried to keep them above water, while they all were clutching his other   , until they were exhausted. The 2 children of Lil Prentiss, were found alone in the boat, uninjured and giving afterwards the story of the accident to our permanent guide Gotlief (Heinie) who arrived with his fast motorboat.

The guide's wife is their camp cook and is in hysterics. Nina has her hands full [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] with calling physician, telephoning answering reporters etc and is acting bravely. Repeated telephone messages here to Celine from reporters etc. etc. until after midnight Celine advised Cornelia and George Baekeland and members of the Middlebrook family. [[underline]] July 16. [[/underline]] Mostly all newspapers published account of the [[red underline]] tragedy. [[/red underline]] The wife of the guide Van Ree now told that her husband had a weak heart and that she had feared when he accepted this position of guide at the camp it might strain him too much. - This explains the whole cause of the tragedy. Furthermore the physicians who examined the 3 corpses, declared that while Lil Prentiss and the Middlebrook boy showed all the signs of having died by drowning, the corpse of van Ree on the contrary did not show these signs but those of sudden death by heart failure. George Baekelands children came here for luncheon. They all have grown considerably since I saw them last when I left for Florida.
