Arrived at Van Loon's about 12:30. He lives there in a pretty cottage surrounded by trees and flowers, which he says he has rented for $150 a month! while the owners are away. His sister of Holland is there for a few days, on a short visit, and talks English fluently, one of his sons of his first wife is there also.
[[red underline]] Mrs van Loon (the Third?) [[/red underline]] has her right hand bandaged on account of a motor car accident. Lively talk as usually about everything. [[red underline]] van Loon [[/red underline]] has been suffering since over a year by [[red underline]] ulcers in his bowels [[/red underline]]. Looks [[red underline]] stouter [[/red underline]] than ever. Tonight has to deliver another Radio talk in New York. I left there about 4 P.M back in Snug Rock at 5.P.M.

He has sold his exploration Yacht - [[red underline]] "Utowanna" [[/red underline]] to a Mr. Lewis who intends to use her for similar purposes also in relation to his interest in "boy-scouts" and "sea-scouts".

perplexities which might be avoided by a [[strikethrough]] less [[/strikethrough]] little more care on her part.
[[underline]] Aug 23. [[/underline]] [[red underline]] Dr. Schmidt [[/red underline]] sent me some excellent turned specimens of a ivory white obtained by following directions described in British patent of [[blank space]], of which original French patent application is dated 1916 and which anticipates almost 10 years the patents on which [[red underline]] Catalin [[/red underline]] won their recent patent suit. Also Rossi sends me copy of a report by J.R. [[red underline]] Brennon [[/red underline]] [[strikethrough]] who wants [[/strikethrough]] one of our chemists in [[red underline]] Bound Brook [[/red underline]] who has succeeded in producing some excellent products by means of [[red underline]] Glycol bari-borate [[/red underline]] in the preparation of [[red underline]] cast resinoids; [[/red underline]] fast curing, tough transparent and light-resistant.

Furthermore they have excellent possibilities for molding because they have an excellent polish.
[[underline]] Aug 24. [[/underline]] Bright cool day beginning at 58°F then milder. All day rereading and indexing my note books. [[red underline]] Have finished No. 3 [[/red underline]] ending by Nov 29-1921, and discussions between [[red underline]] Karpen, Kirk Brown [[/red underline]] and ourselves which led to the [[red underline]] merger of the 3 companies [[/red underline]] into present Bakelite Corporation.
[[vertical note in left margin in red]] George [[/vertical note in left margin]]
On Nov 30-1931 got telegram from [[red underline]] George, [[/red underline]] who then was in Golden Colorado that he [[red underline]] intended sailing [[/red underline]] for Europe Dec. 31-1921. He had just accepted the position of [[red underline]] Geologist - [[/red underline]] Explorer in North Africa, for [[red underline]] Standard [[/red underline]] Oil Co. - So many things have happened since.
[[underline]] Aug 24. [[/underline]] Another bright pleasant cool day. Spent almost entirely in rereading and indexing my notes of 1921 & 22. [[red underline]] Kirk Brown [[/red underline]] appeared as a rather tricky person. I believe
