She absolutely refused to listen to us against her divorce from George Roll and I foretold that after her divorce there would be other perhaps worse troubles for her. - Fortunately her behavior towards George after she was divorced, turned out much better than I dared to expect. - But now a crisis had set in. - That George Roll had every duty to keep her from making blunders. If he was outspoken and disagreeable to her in reminding her [[strikethrough]] from [[/strikethrough]] of her duties she should remember that George had many responsibilities on his shoulders, not only her own family but the large enterprise he was directing and on which the family estate depended. No wonder he should lose now and then his patience when she acted maladroitly. I told her that I, her mother and George specially devoted all our endeavors for the good of the family and the responsibilities connected therewith. She received the benefit thereof and had never contributed much beyond getting children, whose upbringing had been as much in the help advice and actions of her dear mother, while I supplied the funds. Whole conversation was run politely and in the line of warning and advice. All this is very disappointing to Celine and myself. I busy here calculating how many [[red underline]] liquid assets Celine and myself [[/red underline]] have together to face [[red underline]] death taxes, [[/red underline]] and not have to throw the Bakelite stock now owned by Baekeland family on the market. At present market quotations I calculate that our stocks and bonds, (not including real estate, Bakelite stock) amount to but including 25000 life Insurance amount to [[red underline]] 2,711,000. Our real Estate may be worth all together about [[red underline]] 100,000 [[/red underline]] and the Jacobi stocks, not listed perhaps 10,000 more. This does not include some cash in bank. I made this enumeration so as to see whether [[red underline]] merging with Cyanamid [[/red underline]], so as to have family investments more diversified. But from the above calculated results it looks as if [[red underline]] our investments are pretty well diversified [[/red underline]] and in case Celine or I die, the children will find enough liquid investments for facing [[strikethrough]] re [[/strikethrough]] the Estate taxes without having to sacrifice Bakelite stock and thus losing the control of the business founded and developed by me during more than a quarter of a century streneous application.
